The importance of health and fitness

You know, so many people kick off the new year wanting to get healthy, wanting to get in shape. Let's talk about the value of that.

A lot of people think they really understand, but physical fitness, that health, it is so important for longevity of life. Talk about that. Absolutely. So obviously, everybody wants to be in shape. And, uh, the new year is a great way to kind of kick-off that health and wellness for yourself. Uh, really, at the end of the day, it's about just consistent movement, uh, trying to be consistent, find the things that you enjoy doing, and do those often. Um, this is a great opportunity to kind of join, uh, some five K's that are coming up.

Uh, get into a good routine fitness program. Um, consistency is the key to all of it, in my opinion. And then proper progression. A lot of people want those results right away. Uh, and so they go too hard, too fast, and then come February, March, time frame, they've already fizzled out. So my advice to most individuals is to start consistently and, uh, provide that progression. So maybe start off with three days a week, and then build the four and five days a week and just make that an everyday routine. And so hopefully next year you're not starting a whole new program, but you just stay consistent throughout the holidays and consistent into 2024.

Yeah, that's what I was going to ask. I feel like we were talking earlier today on Daybreak, specifically about that, in January you start these health and fitness goals, and then in February or March, they're already gone. Uh, for someone, for example, who is on a weight loss journey, what is something healthy and attainable to maintain throughout the year in terms of that weight loss? Because I know some folks can drop a lot of weight quickly. For some folks, it takes a little bit longer. What are some good goals for that? Yeah, so, uh, have some short term goals and some long-term goals, obviously, for yourself, those short-term goals, reward yourself with, uh, being proud of the fact that you've been consistent.

Right. Um, when you start a weight loss program, it can't just be about physical activity only, but you have to look at that nutritional piece as well. So less calories in or smart calories, and then just move a lot more. Um, when I say progression, start walking and then go into a jog and then go into a sprint. Uh, so that way, you can kind of see those results little by little. People will get frustrated because they'll see results early, and then they'll plateau. And the reason for that is because they haven't progressed accordingly, and they haven't overloaded the system properly.

Uh, so my advice to them is to stay consistent. Watch what you're eating, how you're eating, and then burn those calories through whatever physical activity you enjoy. Fitness is different for everybody. So if you're a runner, go out and run. If running is difficult, go out and walk. And just realize that you just have to maybe spend a little bit more time doing that. Some good things to keep in mind. And I know we have an event coming up for some folks here in Hampton Roads that could kind of kick-off that journey. Tell us about that event.

Yes, so we have a New Year, new Me Run, uh, five K coming up. Uh, we plan on having several of them throughout the year. And again, this is just to kick off some consistency. It'll be at 730 in the morning over at the ACC, uh, Trail Fitness Center. Uh, it is available only to our active duty, I'm sorry, our population can come to Langley Air Force Base. And the goal is to start off by, um, putting in the mileage and starting you can come and walk, you can come and run. Uh, we're giving free prizes to anyone who comes to five of our five K's that are coming out throughout the year.

Uh, we do have a Base White event that will be coming up in October, time frame. It's called Racer on the base. So keep an eye out for that. And then that's when we'll try to open up our community for people to come in and do a tank, uh, during that time frame as well. Um, so we have T-shirts, prizes for our active duty. If you get 1000 miles in, in a certain time frame, 2000 miles, and then a 5000 miles T-shirt as well. Okay, so, again, the whole goal is just to promote movement, uh, promote, um, fitness.

Maybe start with a walk. But by October you're running that tenk. Fantastic. And where can people go to get more information? So, our website, uh, our Facebook page, uh, is probably the best one. So, six, uh, 33rd JBLE, um, website, uh, which I think will be posted on for you guys. And, uh, we'll keep you, uh, informed of any fitness challenges, five KS, or events that we have for our community and for the community at large. Okay? Lots of activities to kind of jumpstart that health and fitness goal here for 2023. Tony, thank you so much. Truly my pleasure. Thank you for having me. Awesome. We'll be right back. All.

Best Exercises for Overall Health & Longevity

How long do you and will we spend from now until you're 90 talking about this?  Well, there's a risk of that. So let's start with a couple of the things that you've already highlighted. So smoking, how much does smoking increase your risk of all-cause mortality? And the reason we like to talk about what's called ACM or all-cause mortality is it's really agnostic to how you die. And that doesn't always make sense. I mean, if you're talking about a very specific intervention, like an, uh, anticancer therapeutic, you really care about cancer-specific mortality or heart-specific mortality. But when we talk about these sorts of broad things, we like to talk about ACM. So using smoking, smoking is approximately a 40% increase in the risk of ACM.  What does that translate to?  And, um, that means I'm shortening my life by 40%? No, it means at any point in time, there's a 40% greater risk that you're going to die relative to a nonsmoker and an ever-s...

What Exercise Does To Your Brain

We all know that exercise is good for your body and your brain. But why? In fact, exercise decreases depression and anxiety.  How and what kind of exercise does that?  That's what I'm talking about today. I'm um, Dr. Tracy Marks, a psychiatrist and I make mental health education videos. You've probably heard the term runners high which describes a phenomenon where after intense aerobic exercise, like running, you can experience this euphoric feeling and sense of well-being. For years it was hypothesized that this was due to the release of endorphins which is your body's natural opiate. Well, it turns out the runner's high really isn't that common among runners. But anyone can experience a relaxed feeling after moderately intense exercise, not from endorphins, but from endocannabinoids. Let me explain.  You do get endorphin release with exercise that serves the purpose of lessening pain perception during and after intense activity. But those endorphins don...

Exercise, Stress, and the Brain

Exercise is interesting in terms of its effects on the brain because it works in about four or five different ways. Uh, one of the most obvious ways is blood flow. And so if you, uh, get your heart working, your brain's going to be filled with oxygen-rich blood and nutrients. So that's the main way that we thought it would help. The other way that's sort of interesting, uh, is it's been thought that exercise produces, uh, new neurons.  And so exercise induces the production of growth factors, one called BDNF, and it actually stimulates the production of new brain cells. Now, when I was in school 20 years ago, we were told, you can't get any new brain cells. So when you're born, that's your lot. You're not going to make any more. But more recently, we found that exercise, uh, is a really good way of stimulating brain cell production. And some of these are functional.  And so, um, just this notion that something that you can do can generate new brain cell...
